Abstract

Polymer composites reinforced with natural and synthetic fibres have emerged as promising materials owing to their tailored structural, mechanical and functional properties. Natural fibres such as jute, flax, and sisal are biodegradable, renewable, lightweight in nature, and cost-effective, making them attractive for various sustainable applications. However, their moisture absorption and poor wettability limit their performance; chemical treatments and surface modifications are employed to improve their fibre–matrix adhesion and mechanical performance. On the other hand, synthetic fibres such as glass and carbon offer high strength, stiffness, and durability, with widespread use in marine, aerospace and automotive sectors. The Processing of polymer composites methods includes hand lay-up, injection moulding, and extrusion that enables formation of structural matrices. Various advanced characterization techniques such as Raman X-ray diffraction, Raman analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provides information on the structural make-up, crystallinity and bonding in the composites. This review discusses the latest developments in fiber-reinforced polymer composites, focussing on the types of fibre, processing techniques, structural and mechanical behaviour, and recent progress in the areas related to polymer composites.
