Abstract

As locations of critical interest in the city framework, roundabouts can not only facilitate efficient traffic flow but also introduce cultural and aesthetic orientations. The conventional beautification strategies, however, are prone to the problem of sustainability, care, and contextualization. The paper explains how stainless steel can be used to enhance the appearance of a roundabout in two of the proposed setups, Dhwani and NAAD, in New Delhi. The two projects share a similar design objective: they seek to abstract the notions of sound and resonance through urban metaphors and to offer structural and weathering qualities and a reflective shape, both in stainless steel. The paper identifies the contribution of the material to long-term sustainability, savings, and low maintenance costs, as well as the creation of modern, culturally oriented urban designs. The findings suggest that roundabouts can be permanent features of place and social engagement in Indian cities, with the help of stainless steel and a consideration of con textual design.
