- Abstract
Urbanization has increased at a faster pace than envisioned in the 2011 census. Rapid urbanization is causing sanitation and environmental concerns that have an adverse impact on public health. This paper evaluates the suitability of using stainless steel to enhance and maintain the cleanliness and overall hygiene of public spaces. It also assesses general issues related to building materials that affect sanitation, wear and tear of public utilities, and the resulting environmental stresses that elevate contamination and the spread of epidemics in public spaces. The study adopts a comparative and analytical approach, drawing on literature review, material performance studies, and case examples of stainless steel applications in urban infrastructure. Although steel has broad utility in construction, this paper limits its scope to evaluating the suitability of stainless steel for applications in areas with a high probability of its use in the “touch zone” in public areas.
