Abstract

This study explores the economic growth of Haryana’s agriculture and allied sectors, emphasizing the role of principal crop yields. Agriculture remains pivotal to Haryana’s economy, contributing significantly to income and employment despite its declining share in the state’s GDP. Understanding the determinants of agricultural growth is vital for formulating effective policies to enhance productivity and sustainability. This research investigates the growth patterns of Haryana’s agriculture and allied sectors, focusing on the influence of key crop yields, including wheat, rice, sugarcane, and oilseeds, on the sector’s gross state value added (GSVA). A multiple linear regression analysis was conducted using secondary data (2011–12 to 2021–22) at constant 2011–12 prices. The dependent variable, GSVA, was regressed against log-transformed yields of the principal crops to identify their respective contributions to agricultural growth. The results indicate that wheat, rice, and oilseeds yields significantly impact the GSVA of Haryana’s agriculture sector, with wheat having the most substantial effect. Conversely, sugarcane yield exhibited a statistically insignificant influence. The model explained 92.2% of the variation in agricultural growth, demonstrating its robustness. These findings highlight the importance of targeted policies to boost the yield of high-impact crops like wheat and oilseeds while encouraging crop diversification to reduce dependency on dominant crops. This study underscores the need for tailored interventions, including yield enhancement programs, efficient resource utilization, and crop diversification strategies, to sustain and augment agricultural growth in Haryana.
