Abstract

This study investigates emerging job opportunities and skill gaps among local enterprises in India, based on a survey of 342 enterprises. It reveals that 53% of enterprises experienced growth in sales and turnover over the past three years, particularly in sectors such as hardware shops and MSMEs, while the hotel and restaurant sector continues to struggle post-COVID-19, and grocery shops face challenges attributed to the rise of quick commerce platforms like Blinkit and Zepto. Although 80% of enterprises either maintained or increased their employee base, many reported jobless growth despite rising sales, with employers showing a preference for hiring locals for low-skill positions but favoring non-locals for specialized roles due to a shortage of candidates with the necessary skills and attitudes. To address this, employers often resort to hiring helpers and providing on-the-job training. The study identifies six key occupations with substantial job potential—salesperson, motor mechanic, electrician, fitter, beautician, and tailor—and underscores the need for vocational training programs focused on both technical and soft skills to align with local economic demands. These findings provide valuable insights into India’s employment landscape and skill development requirements, enhancing understanding of workforce readiness and regional economic priorities.
