Abstract

In the context of rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, natural language processing technologies such as ERNIE Bot, Qwen, and ChatGPT have seen significant development, exerting great impact on the development of translation. These tools, with their powerful language comprehension and production capacity, have demonstrated unprecedented potential in translating everyday paperwork, professional documents, and even literary works. However, when it comes to classical literature, they face unique challenges, primarily due to the distinctive syntactic features of such texts, which include but are not limited to complex sentence structures, diverse rhetorical devices, and profound cultural connotations. This paper selects specific examples from Chinese Myths and fantasies, and conducts a comparative analysis in view of Newmark’s definition of text functions—expressive, informative, and vocative functions by combining the use of the aforementioned AI tools with human translation. The aim is to explore the application and limitations of artificial intelligence in the translation of classical literature, in order to provide a reference for promoting the translation of classical literature under the background of artificial intelligence.
