- Abstract
The study aims to investigate anthropometric parameters, hormonal indicators, and quality of life in patients with obesity, with a focus on somatotropic function. The study included 800 patients with obesity and 20 healthy individuals in the control group. Anthropometric measurements (BMI, waist-to-hip ratio), hormonal assessments (GH, IGF-1, TSH, free T4), and a quality-of-life survey using the QoL-AGHDA scale were conducted. Patients with obesity demonstrated significantly higher BMI values (31.2 ± 3.1 vs. 24.0 ± 2.2 kg/m2, p<0.001) and waist-to-hip ratio (0.89–0.92 vs. 0.82, p<0.001). Somatotropic function was markedly impaired: peak GH levels were more than twofold lower, and IGF-1 levels were almost twice as low compared to controls (p<0.001). Thyroid function parameters (TSH, free T4) remained within normal ranges and showed no statistically significant differences between groups. According to the QoL-AGHDA scale, patients reported lower quality of life than controls, particularly among women (p<0.001). Obese patients are characterized by a pronounced deficiency of the somatotropic axis while maintaining normal thyroid function, which is accompanied by reduced quality of life. Comprehensive clinical and hormonal monitoring with a focus on identifying somatotropic deficiency is essential.
