Abstract

This article explores the impact of the Maritime Leadership Camp (MLC) programme on the formation of sustainability-based leaders among young people, especially those living in coastal and island areas. This programme was designed by The Floating School as an effort to improve environmentally-conscious and sustainable leadership through contextual education. This study aims to understand how contextual learning models can increase young people’s awareness and ability to face the challenges of climate change and marine ecosystem degradation. The method used in this study is qualitative analysis with an in-depth interview approach with the founder of The Floating School and MLC participants. The results show that MLC has succeeded in increasing young people’s knowledge, awareness, and skills in maritime and environmental literacy. The programme also succeeded in shaping a change in mindset among participants, encouraging them to implement real actions based on sustainability in their leadership policies and practices. These findings emphasise the importance of experience-based education rooted in local contexts in enhancing community resilience to climate change. The significance of these findings is that they provide an educational model that can be replicated in other regions in Indonesia and ASEAN, supporting young leaders who are proactive in sustainability. The benefit of this research is that it provides insights into the application of sustainability-based education to improve the quality of leadership among young people.
