Abstract

This study examines environmental management in nickel mining activities on Kabaena Island, Southeast Sulawesi, with a focus on its impacts on marine ecosystems and the well-being of coastal communities. Increased mining activities, often linked to global energy needs, have created a conflict between economic growth and environmental degradation. This study uses analysis of national and local media coverage to examine how environmental issues, government responses, and power relations between the state and mining companies are portrayed in the public sphere. The results show that the media highlights weak oversight, policy imbalances, and increasing sedimentation and marine pollution. The narrative of sustainable development is often used to legitimize mining expansion without regard for transparency and community participation. These findings illustrate the imbalance between global interests and local capacity in managing natural resources. Therefore, strengthening ecological justice, policy transparency, and community engagement are crucial to achieving sustainable maritime development on Kabaena Island. These efforts are considered crucial for the sustainability of the ecosystem and the well-being of the community in the region.
