Abstract

Climate change poses serious challenges to coastal communities in Indonesia that depend on marine resources and maritime traditions. This study aims to explain how the integration of local values and digital media within the communication ecology can strengthen the social resilience of coastal communities. The research employs a qualitative approach using digital ethnography and a light version of Grounded Theory analysis. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and online documentation of coastal communities in Maluku and Sulawesi. The findings reveal that local values such as Sasi Laut in Maluku and Maccera tasi in Sulawesi function as socio-ecological communication systems that instill collective responsibility and environmental awareness. These traditions have been transformed through digital spaces, where communities use social media and online groups to disseminate values of mutual cooperation, enhance climate literacy, and coordinate adaptive actions. The integration of traditional communication and digital media has given rise to a hybrid model of maritime communication ecologya communication pattern that interconnects spiritual, social, and technological dimensions to sustain socio-ecological balance. This study concludes that the social resilience of coastal communities depends not only on policies or infrastructure but also on communication grounded in cultural values. The findings enrich environmental communication theory and provide a practical foundation for developing participatory, contextual, and culturally rooted climate adaptation policies.
