Abstract

This study analyzes how blue feminism is manifested through women’s entrepreneurship and coastal empowerment processes on Langkai Island, Indonesia. Employing an ethnographic approach combined with Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), Social Network Analysis (SNA), and Participatory Geographical Information System (PGIS) for seascape mapping, the research was conducted from September 2024 to May 2025. The findings reveal that empowerment interventions have catalyzed a transformation of women’s identities—from domestic roles to productive actors in the blue economy. The women of Langkai not only manage the production and distribution of marine resources but also cultivate an economic system founded on solidarity, trust, and ecological ethics rooted in the local moral philosophy of siri’ na pacce. Through social networks and digital innovations, they have developed a moral economy model that prioritizes the balance between profit, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. Empowerment in Langkai is therefore not merely the result of training or capital assistance but stems from the internalization of collective values that transform government-led projects into sustainable social institutions. Accordingly, this study demonstrates that blue feminism in practice functions as a transformative force intertwining gender equality, social morality, and ecological sustainability within the context of Indonesia’s coastal communities.
