Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of coastal women in improving economic security in Takalar Regency through a human security perspective. As a coastal area dependent on the fisheries and seaweed cultivation sectors, Takalar faces various economic vulnerabilities due to fluctuations in catches, price instability, and limited access to capital and technology. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study method, conducted in Boddia Village, Galesong District. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six fishermen’s wives and field observations. The results show that coastal women play an important role in managing household finances, mitigating risks, and maintaining family welfare amidst the uncertain income of fishermen. Although some families have relatively high incomes, material well-being has not been fully achieved, indicating that economic security is not only determined by the amount of income, but also by the ability to manage resources effectively. Thus, the role of coastal women is a key element in strengthening the economic security dimension of the human security concept. This study provides a theoretical contribution to strengthening the human security perspective in coastal development studies and forms the basis for women’s economic empowerment policies in maritime areas.
