- Abstract
Shelters in maritime areas function as temporary residences for communities experiencing mobility and socio-economic transformation. The process of social adaptation among residents is highly influenced by communication, both in daily interactions and in relation to shelter management. This study analyzes the role of communication in the social adaptation of residents at Shelter KWN Fatimah Azzahrah. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings show that interpersonal communication among residents fosters solidarity and mutual support, while communication with shelter managers provides direction, structure, and access to resources. Nevertheless, barriers such as differences in social background, limited facilities, and uneven information flow hinder the adaptation process. The study concludes that communication plays a pivotal role in strengthening social integration and resilience of residents. These results emphasize the importance of developing communication strategies that support daily interactions and empower shelter residents in their long-term adaptation.
