Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of social media in maritime education, with a focus on efforts to improve environmental literacy among the younger generation. Given the increasingly urgent environmental challenges, especially those related to coastal and marine ecosystem damage, environmental literacy is key to promoting greater awareness and knowledge based action. Social media, with its wide reach and ease of access, has become an effective means of disseminating information related to marine issues. This study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach covering the period 20202025 to identify trends and impacts of social media use in improving the maritime environmental literacy of the younger generation. The results show that educational and creative content on social media, such as short videos, infographics, and digital campaigns, can attract attention and increase understanding of the importance of marine conservation. In addition, collaboration between environmental organizations, governments, and social media influencers has accelerated the dissemination of positive environmental messages. This study also found gaps in digital literacy and access to technology in several regions, which affect the effectiveness of social media use in the context of maritime education. Based on these findings, it is recommended that social media-based maritime education policies and programs better accommodate digital gaps and strengthen the involvement of the younger generation in coastal and marine environmental conservation campaigns.
