Abstract

Coastal and maritime regions face increasing risks from climate change, sea-level rise, and operational hazards in shipping and ports. Effective risk communication is essential for preparedness and resilience, yet current research remains fragmented. This study systematically reviews 63 peer-reviewed articles (2020–2025) from the Scopus database using PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Bibliometric mapping and thematic synthesis identify publication trends, dominant themes, and research gaps. Findings reveal a growing but regionally imbalanced literature, concentrated in North America and Europe while Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Pacific remain underrepresented. Thematic analysis highlights three orientations: hazard-focused studies on early warning and preparedness, community-oriented research on perception and participation, and maritime-focused research on safety culture and institutional coordination. Although mixed methods are common, theoretical integration remains limited. The review emphasizes three priorities for future inquiry: expanding inclusivity across vulnerable regions, deepening theoretical engagement, and adopting more innovative, interdisciplinary designs. Addressing these gaps will enhance both scholarly understanding and the practical effectiveness of risk communication in coastal and maritime contexts.
