Abstract

This study conducts a critical examination of online media discourse, focusing on DetikKalimantan’s coverage of ISO 14001 compliance in the alleged environmental pollution case involving PT Phoenix Resources International (PRI) in Tarakan, North Kalimantan. Using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework and a qualitative descriptive approach, the research explores how linguistic practices in media reporting construct public perceptions of industrial responsibility and ecological crises. At the microstructural level, lexical selections such as “alleged,” “pollute,” and “to be investigated” reflect an effort to balance journalistic objectivity with implicit acknowledgment of potential violations. The mesostructural analysis identifies DetikKalimantan as a strategic actor that extends local environmental concerns to the national agenda through cross-platform dissemination, reinforcing public awareness and functioning as a mechanism of social accountability. At the macrostructural level, the case illustrates the interconnection between local and global environmental issues, emphasizing the significance of adherence to international standards such as ISO 14001. The neglect of ISO 14001 principles by PT PRI reveals systemic weaknesses in environmental governance, where language, power, and social structures intersect in shaping public discourse on sustainability and corporate accountability.
