Foreword

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO Constitution).

Preface

The intricate relationship between health and social sciences is paramount in addressing complex global challenges such as pandemics, demographic shifts, social inequalities, climate change, and the integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). The COVID-19 pandemic starkly illustrated the interconnectedness of these domains, highlighting the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches to mitigate health crises and their far-reaching social, economic, and psychological consequences. Similarly, aging populations demand integrated health and social care systems, while addressing social determinants of health is crucial for reducing health disparities. The impacts of climate change on health and well-being necessitate holistic adaptation and mitigation strategies that bridge health and social science perspectives. Furthermore, the burgeoning use of AI in both fields presents opportunities and ethical challenges that require careful interdisciplinary consideration. Recognizing the vital synergy between these disciplines, the World Conference on Health and Social Sciences, themed “Connecting People in Health and Social Sciences,” will serve as a global platform for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to exchange knowledge, experiences, and innovations. Held in October 23–24, 2024, coinciding with the National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW), the conference feature discussions, research presentations, book launches, and dedicated sessions on NLPPW, emphasizing strategies to protect communities from lead exposure. This conference aims to foster constructive dialogue and cross-disciplinary collaborations, ultimately generating innovative and sustainable solutions for pressing global health and social issues and strengthening international cooperation for global well-being.

This conference involved speakers and participants from more than ten countries. There were five speakers at this conference, including Prof. Vidhya Venugopal from Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, India, Prof. Theo Bodin from Karolinska Institute, Sweden, Prof. Erwin Faller from Holy Child Central Colleges Inc., Philippines, Dr. Yaya Suryana from Indonesia Research and Innovation Agency, and Dr. Anna Suraya from Binawan University, Indonesia. The committee received about 114 abstracts that have been presented, and there were 31 articles that have been accepted for publication. There were 19 articles carried in the book series published by Atlantis Press from the total number.

Finally, we would like to thank all the presenters for the willingness to share their latest research and ideas and all the participations for their keen and active participation. Without your efforts, the 2nd WCHSS 2024 would not be possible.
