Abstract

This research aims to explore several aspects of character makeup in the Gundala-gundala mask dance, focusing on: 1) modifications to character makeup in alignment with the traditional elements of the Karo tribe, 2) the feasibility of character makeup for Gundala-gundala dancers based on these traditional elements, 3) the practicality of character makeup for the dancers in terms of the Karo tribe’s traditions. Makeup in this context is viewed as a form of culture that evolves over time, much like traditional dances. One notable example is the Tembut-tembut mask dance, which is closely associated with the ritual of calling rain, called Ndilo Wari Udan. This ritual has significant meaning, aiming to invoke rain during a prolonged dry season, and it is still practiced in several villages in Tanah Karo. In modern times, the use of Tembut-tembut masks in Gundala-gundala dances has shifted more toward entertainment, while originally serving dual purposes—ritual and entertainment. The Tembut-tembut mask features five distinct character types: the king, queen, king’s daughter, commander, and gurda gurdi bird. Each character plays a vital role in the performance, and the masks are interdependent. This research employs a descriptive approach, using primary data from observations and interviews, and secondary data from photographic documentation. The analysis includes qualitative techniques to explore the makeup procedure for Gundala-gundala dancers, alongside quantitative analysis to evaluate the makeup results for the characters.
