Abstract

This study investigates global research patterns on waste, wastewater, and air pollution with a specific focus on the roles and contributions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Using a bibliometric approach, the analysis draws from publications indexed in the Web of Science between 2014 and 2024 to identify scientific productivity, thematic structures, collaboration dynamics, and conceptual developments within this field. Keyword co-occurrence, authorship networks, institutional linkages, and temporal publication trends were examined through Bibliometrix (RStudio), complemented by advanced visual analytics in OriginPro. The findings show a steady increase in research emphasizing NGO participation in environmental management, driven by rising global concerns over pollution and community-centered interventions. Waste-related studies dominate the dataset, followed by wastewater and air pollution topics, each exhibiting distinct thematic clusters ranging from regulatory advocacy to community-based monitoring and technology adoption. NGOs emerge as key actors shaping policy discourse, enhancing public awareness, and supporting data collection in resource-limited settings. Despite growing engagement, research gaps remain in impact evaluation, interdisciplinary integration, and scalability of NGO-led initiatives. This study provides a comprehensive mapping of scientific landscapes related to NGO involvement in pollution issues, offering insights to strengthen future collaborations, policy frameworks, and evidence-based environmental governance.
