- Abstract
The Qing Dynasty bird-tuned bells were not only timekeeping devices, but also a civilized dialogue between Chinese and Western cultures. Their value has continued to rise over time, but the traditional craftsmanship of the bird-tuned bells has now disappeared. The scarcity characteristic of the Qing Dynasty bird-tuned bells is rooted in multiple dimensions of structural tension, specifically manifested as the combined effect of historical circumstances, technological gaps, and cultural evolution. In the precise construction of the bird-tuned bells, the symbolic expression of the technological authority during the Kangxi-Qianlong era is condensed, and it also reflects the dialogue and competition between the two civilization systems on both ends of the Eurasian continent in the 18th century. Currently, while protecting the internal mechanism of the bird-tuned bells, the digital recreation of their sounds requires better inheritance and development. This interactive device continuously extends the material life of mechanical civilization, and can also be reconstructed in a cross-temporal cultural dialogue through multiple media and digital means in the digital age.
