- Abstract
This paper systematically investigates the sources of Seurat’s pictorial space construction. First, by reviewing the Neo-Impressionist context of the late 19th century, it analyzes how Seurat employed “pointillism” and “orderly rationality” to carry out a planar practice, exploring the ways in which he structured and divided his pictorial space. Secondly, it delves into the influences of “classical style” and his contemporaries on Seurat, revealing how he achieved decorative and standardized pictorial features through the ordering of formal elements and the rationalization of emotional elements. Additionally, the paper focuses on the visual quality of Seurat’s pointillist expression, analyzing how he refuted, corrected, and scientized Impressionist modeling, and how he combined traditional modeling with modern life themes to create a planar pictorial space with distinctive characteristics. Finally, the paper summarizes Seurat’s contributions to the evolution of early modernist painting and his influence on later generations, providing new perspectives and theoretical support for understanding Seurat’s artistic style and the development of modernist painting.
