Abstract

To explore the color characteristics of Kazakh embroidery in Xinjiang, 12 typical wall hanging embroideries were selected as experimental samples. Color extraction was performed using the K-means clustering algorithm with the assistance of MATLAB software; Based on the results of the image color extraction, we first utilized the HSV color space and quantitative analysis methods to examine the color characteristics of the embroidery threads themselves through the encoded or calculated results of four indicators: hue (warmth/coolness), average saturation, average lightness, and color entropy. Second, using the Lab color space, we examined the color characteristics of the figure-ground relationship through the calculated results of two aspects: lightness difference and total color difference. The study indicates that the color system of Kazakh embroidery exhibits a color scheme characterized by “dominant warm tones, medium saturation, high brightness, and strong contrast,” This color scheme serves not only as a psychological and emotional refuge for the Kazakh people—developed in response to the harsh, cold environment of the grasslands and drawing on warm visual imagery—but also as a direct reflection of their reserved, gentle, and unpretentious aesthetic sensibilities. At the same time, these color characteristics meet the practical need for high visual distinctiveness in nomadic life, thereby uniting aesthetic value with practical functionality.
