Proceedings of the 1st International Symposium on African Sustainable Energy Solutions (AfrSusEnS 2024)
Conference: Proceedings of the 1st International Symposium on African Sustainable Energy Solutions (AfrSusEnS 2024)
Date: 25-28 August 2024
Location: Sun City, South Africa (Offline)
Website: https://2024.afrsusens.com/Call-Papers.html It is with great enthusiasm that we present the proceedings of the 1st International Symposium on African Sustainable Energy Solutions (AfrSusEnS), held from August 25–28, 2024, in the scenic setting of Sun City, South Africa. This gathering marks a significant milestone in the collective effort to chart a sustainable energy future for Africa. This event, organized by the University of South Africa (UNISA) in partnership with esteemed partners from China, Hunan University of Science and Technology (HNUST), Hebei University of Science and Technology (HBUST), and Wuhan Institute of Technol ogy (WIT), has gathered a diverse and influential group. Academic researchers, industry experts, government leaders, and financial sector stakeholders are united by a common goal: to address the continent’s pressing energy needs through innovation, dialogue, and strategic collaboration. The symposium could not have come at a more pressing time. In light of the fact that Africa’s expanding energy demands are coming into conflict with the realities of climate change, infrastructural shortfalls, and socioeconomic inequality, the continent is currently at a crossroads. In spite of the fact that policy tools such as the Integrated Resource Plan have created a significant foundation, there is still a great deal of work to be done in order to transform vision into tangible effect. Over the course of four days, AfrSusEnS provided a rich forum for exploring prac tical and scalable solutions. Discussions spanned a diverse range of topics, including alternative/green fuel and chemical production, electroprocesses for energy conversions, CO2 capture, storage, and utilization, hydrogen energy, energy storage, biomass/waste to energy, as well as current energy projects in Africa. Beyond fostering rigorous research, the symposium reaffirmed Africa’s ability to lead the global energy transition on its own terms and in alignment with its unique developmental aspirations. This compilation includes articles and discussions that challenge assumptions, propose innovative solutions, and directly tackle the continent’s most pressing con cerns, providing insight into that culture. We expect this collection will stimulate more multidisciplinary collaboration both locally and internationally. We would like to express our gratitude to the sponsors and supporting organizations that helped make this event a reality, such as the South Africa-China Science and Technology Association (SACTSA), the International Association for Carbon Capture (IACC), and the Gauteng Catalysis Forum (GCF), Anton Paar Southern Africa, Merck, Greenrich, Elleyhill Power, AC Scientific, Hilden Analytical, Poretech, HNUST, HBUST, WIT, and UNISA. To all readers, writers, and participants: may the concepts presented here inspire action and advance Africa’s transition to a resilient and inclusive energy future.
