Abstract

This paper discusses the topic of ethical AI practices, exploring what Artificial Intelligence is and how libraries have implemented it to provide better services. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has an immense impact on our lives, personally and professionally; we are utilising the AI features and functions from GPS to assist in writing publications. Knowing how tedious it can be when it comes to searching references for research through traditional formats, with AI support, the mechanical and traditional way of searching has been automated, and the time spent on this work has been reduced. The paper has mentioned how our education system and government are focusing on bridging the gap between the ethical use of AI and the unethical use of AI amongst the users, while setting up ethical guidelines and governance. The paper has some brief points that present the perspective of AI application within a library and information centre. It discusses the historical background of AI technology, ethical aspects and the challenges libraries and their patrons face in understanding this advanced technology. The challenges are services purely developed by AI, fairly used, and maintaining integrity, equity and transparency throughout the services. The paper reflects the major issues, including the transparency of AI tools and their impact on decision-making processes, which are crucial for identifying unethical practices. AI has proven beneficial for libraries, enhancing their ability to reach out to patrons and providing improved, customised services. It also emphasises the pros and cons of AI and how AI has the potential to generate misinformation and disinformation.
