The Asia Pacific Sociological Association Conference (APSA 2024) was organized by the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Hasanuddin University, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Sociological Association (APSA). This year’s conference was successfully conducted on 26–27 October 2024, with the theme of “Global Resilience: Thriving Amidst Planetary Challenges for a Sustainable Future.”

The conference was opened by the Rector of Hasanuddin University, who also gave brief information about the university. After that, the keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Emma Porio from the Philippines, delivered her keynote address in person in the main plenary session in 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. Moreover, a qualified and experienced moderator from the lecturers of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Hasanuddin University, moderated this session. More than 200 participants excitedly attended the meeting, taking part from the opening ceremony to the end of the plenary session. In addition to the main plenary session, APSA Conference 2024 also had another two plenary sessions that covered five invited speaker addresses from Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand.

APSA Conference 2024 accommodated 35 presenters from Indonesia, Australia, Thailand, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan. They were divided into eight-panel classrooms that ran parallel session presentations. Each room had a moderator who managed the presentation and Q&A session. They had a 20-minute presentation and a 5-minute Q&A session allocation time. All of the presenters and participants in each room had fruitful discussions, improving participants’ understanding based on the material presented. It also aimed to exchange ideas among others.

The most profound appreciation was given to the partner, committee, keynote speakers, presenters, participants, and those who supported the conference to ensure its success. All of the participants joined and took part in all of these sessions without any significant problems. As proof of conference participation, all keynote speakers, presenters, and participants received a certificate from the committee after the conference.

This proceeding is the compilation of 24 accepted manuscripts from the presenters. It presents the research results, ideas, information, and applications related to the theory, design, development, implementation, testing, or evaluation in the areas of sociology. Various topics in the sociology discipline are covered in this proceeding. Under the theme of “Global Resilience: Thriving Amidst Planetary Challenges for a Sustainable Future,” the conference covers several sub-themes consisting of:

2. Demographic change, sustainable city, and urban planning
3. Social ecology, green economy, conservation, and local knowledge
4. Social change and community empowerment
5. Energy, transportation, and digital society
6. Identity, conflict, and social movement
7. Maritime society and regional security
8. Climate change refugee
9. Democratic climate governance
10. Environmental ethics and policy
11. Mining conflict and indigenous people
12. Environment and public health
13. Community resilience and environmental cultural

We hope that this volume can contribute to gathering and sharing ideas, research, practices, and experiences to deal with the complex nexus of contemporary planetary challenges surrounding the sociology discipline. Moreover, we hope everyone enjoys reading this volume of proceedings and gains advantages in developing ideas for research in the sociology discipline. We appreciate the effort and the hard work of those involved and look forward to a more successful APSA conference next year.
