Abstract

This study investigates the factors that influence entrepreneurial intention among students in Malaysian public universities, addressing the limited local research on this topic despite extensive global literature. Five key variables are examined: innovativeness, locus of control, need for achievement, need for independence, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. By exploring these psychological and personal characteristics, the study aims to identify the traits that motivate students to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option. The findings are intended to support educators, policymakers, organizations, and marketers in designing initiatives that nurture entrepreneurial mindsets among youth. This research also highlights the importance of promoting entrepreneurship as an alternative to traditional career pathways, particularly in a rapidly evolving economic landscape. Insights from the study may assist universities and government agencies in developing targeted training programs, support systems, and policies that strengthen students’ readiness and confidence to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Ultimately, this study contributes to filling a gap in Malaysian literature and offers practical implications for enhancing the entrepreneurial ecosystem within higher education.
