Abstract

To explore the development process of a thick fog in Jiangyin during winter, this study employed in this research include the elements of ship-borne automatic weather station, the infrared and visible cloud images from Himawari-8, and the data of wind, humidity, pressure fields, and sea temperature in the final operational global analysis data of the United States. Through the analysis of cloud map evolution process, weather situation, sea-air temperature difference and inversion layer, the evolution process of a sea fog in Jiangyin area from January 2nd to 5th, 2024 is explored, The following conclusions were drawn:(1) The fog process was mainly dominated by advection fog, with its evolution process clearly shown in the visible cloud images; (2) Jiangyin was controlled by the high-pressure system when the sea fog developed most vigorously; (3) The results of humidity field analysis indicate that there is abundant water vapor over the sea surface, and the sea temperature difference is maintained between -1 and 2 ℃, which constitutes the optimal conditions for the sea-fog formation.
