Abstract

This paper reviews the recent progress in the development of lithium-ion battery technologies, which emphasizes the operation mechanism and achievements in battery materials. The battery works based on the movement of lithium ions between the anode and cathode in the electrolyte isolated by the separator. The challenges in the optimization of cathode lie in the balance between the energy density and structural stability, which is crucial to the performance during the charging and discharging cycling. While the anode faces the limitations in the restricted capacity and volume expansion related to the battery lifetime. As for the separator materials, the problems focused on the poor thermal stability and low mechanical strength are essential to safety. To overcome these troubles, great efforts have been made by the researchers to design and optimize the structures of cathode, anode and separator materials. In the future, the government and industry should also support the research on the battery materials by establishing the fund, pilot projects and encouragement policies.
