- Abstract
In recent years, an increasing number of linguists and scholars have examined the relationship between second or foreign language learning and the construction of learners’ identities from various perspectives. Their findings indicate that language learning is closely intertwined with learners’ identities, which in turn influence second language acquisition. However, research focusing on the identities of English dual-degree learners—addressing the questions of “Who am I?” or “Who are we?”—remains relatively scarce both domestically and internationally. This study thus concentrates on the more complex identities of English dual-degree learners, aiming to transcend the traditional unidisciplinary theoretical frameworks. It seeks to analyze and elucidate the key issues surrounding language learners’ identities and identity construction from a sociolinguistic, psycho-cultural, and interdisciplinary approach that integrates sociology and psychology. The research reveals that dual-degree learners undergo shifts in identity while studying English as a second major; however, they continue to identify primarily with their first major, resulting in a limited recognition of their dual-degree identity. While embracing foreign cultures, they maintain a strong sense of affiliation with their own culture and simultaneously learn to adapt to the identity associated with the target language and its culture. Consequently, issues of identity have profound implications for second language acquisition and are significantly linked to learners’ motivation.
