Abstract

From a cross-cultural perspective, this study examined the current status and factors influencing undergraduate medical interns understanding of cross-cultural doctor-patient communication using a validated questionnaire survey. Findings revealed that while medical interns demonstrated proficiency in procedural communication aspects, they showed deficiencies in culturally sensitive communication and cultural diversity awareness. While assessments demonstrated strong listening skills, interns tended to engage in selective information gathering and premature communication termination. The dual challenges of clinician-patient trust erosion and patient health literacy gaps emerge as primary barriers to effective cross-cultural medical communication. Both clinical instruction and internship phases prove vital for developing cross-cultural communication competency. This study proposes evidence-based strategies to improve intercultural communication competencies in medical interns and suggests curricular reforms for enhancing medical humanities education.
