- Abstract
Against the backdrop of increased domestic attention on the practical application of language learning instead of exam-oriented education, this article probes into test adaptation in the hope of examining whether phonological notice of dialect similarities and differences with English can enhance oral English skills of Chinese college students. Serving as a preliminary blueprint for the desired test model, inspecting the feasibility of the above proposition, this article draws on Treiman’s definition of phonological awareness and Taylor’s classification of tests. It conducts a case study on Changde college students and mainly articulates four parts of test design, including use and purpose, subject, rationalities of adaptation, and test instrumentation. In the end, it discusses current shortfalls and prospects. This research lays a solid foundation for future research on the help of dialect transfer in English speaking by suggesting a framework for examining Chinese L2 learners’ problems in regards to dialect transfer, and can potentially deepen understanding of English education in China.
