- Abstract
This study explores the impact of virtual exchange (VE) models on intercultural competence. It mainly focuses on the telecollaboration, e-tandem and collaborative online international learning (COIL) models, which are typical VE models. After the outbreak of COVID-19, higher education institutions refocused on online education and reduced their traditional international programs. In such a context, VE programs have received widespread acceptance. VE programs characterized by technological support and intercultural interaction between students have become the alternative for developing intercultural learning. This paper discusses different VE models and their effectiveness in promoting intercultural competence and provides some suggestions for VE pedagogical strategies. This study proves that telecollaboration, e-tandem and COIL can promote language skills and intercultural understanding. However, technological proficiency, cultural sensitivity and assessment design can still challenge students and teachers. Future research needs to develop towards more extensive, diverse and longitudinal research and influence of AI.
