Abstract

The sentence processing mechanism is a complex cerebral function and involves multiple factors at the genetic and experiential levels. This article presents a coherent model (namely, the FOXP2 and ROBO1 model) that integrates the genetic architecture, comprising FOXP2 and ROBO1 variants, and in analogy, the linguistic experience that accounts for the variability in neural mechanisms of sentence comprehension. We synthesize evidence that (i) genetic variants influence the structural and connectional substrate of language-relevant regions (e.g., posterior inferior frontal gyrus and planum temporale), and (ii) linguistic experience shapes the functional recruitment and coupling of cortical networks during comprehension. This article, gathering the empirical evidence from neurogenetic and cross-linguistic neurosciences, claims that sentence comprehension takes place in the network created by the exiting interplay of genetic predisposition and the influence of environment, which leads to a more comprehensive model intended to account for the differences in language processing.
