Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence is increasingly used in higher education, but its value may depend on whether it is embedded in course-specific pedagogy. This study examined three instructional support modes in a university ideological and political theory course. We initially recruited 163 students from three intact parallel classes; after listwise deletion, the final analytic sample included 150 students assigned to traditional teaching, traditional teaching plus general-purpose AI support, or traditional teaching plus a curriculum-embedded customized AI teaching assistant. After pretest scores were controlled, the customized AI condition showed significantly higher knowledge mastery, learning engagement, and course value recognition than both comparison conditions. The findings suggest that GenAI is more educationally useful when anchored in course resources and structured learning tasks than when used as an unrestricted general-purpose tool.
