- Abstract
“History of Foreign Architecture” is a crucial core course for undergraduate students majoring in architecture and urban planning. The conventional teaching model focuses primarily on historical facts, making classes engaging but often leading to confusion or forgetfulness among students. This is due to the emphasis on rote memorization rather than genuine understanding. This paper addresses these issues by adopting a problem-oriented approach, aiming to improve the knowledge system of architectural history and theory, and to strengthen the support of architectural history for core design courses. Using “cultural memory” as a central theme, it explores how historical knowledge can be transformed into design resources and inspiration. Building on this foundation, a series of teaching reforms are proposed to guide students in learning foreign architectural history with a dialectical and critical perspective, internalizing knowledge and applying it to creative architectural design practices.
