Abstract

As China’s higher education enters a phase of universalization and high-quality development, private universities play an increasingly vital role in talent cultivation systems. The rise of applied undergraduate education imposes new demands on faculty teaching competencies. Educators must not only possess solid disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical skills but also demonstrate practice-oriented approaches, innovative thinking, and industry-education integration capabilities. Currently, private university faculty face prominent challenges in developing applied teaching competencies, including insufficient practical experience, limited training systems, and inadequate evaluation mechanisms. This paper defines the core characteristics of “applied teaching competencies,” analyzes key factors influencing their enhancement among private university faculty, and proposes systematic development pathways across three dimensions: individual faculty members, institutional management, and policy environments. The research concludes that advancing applied teaching competencies in private universities requires coordinated efforts in policy support, institutional safeguards, and individual growth. A competency-driven teacher education system should be established to propel high-quality, substantive development in private higher education.
