Abstract

Respected as one of Indonesia’s national strategic commodities, shallot is also known as the common and must have ingredient in Asian cuisine. However, chemical inputs are used intensively in shallot farming in order to achieve high productivity, ignoring the environmental and health issues. To overcome the issues, organic farming is still claimed as the environmentally friendly farming practices that supports sustainable agriculture concept. Hence, the aim of this study is to explore the degree of organic shallot farming acceptance and investigate the determinants of farmers’ acceptance toward organic shallot practices. The interview had been conducted involving 100 shallot farmers in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia using structured questionnaires within 5-scale Likert. Descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) under the construction of modified Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) were used to analyze the quantitative data. The result showed that farmers’ shallot acceptability of organic farming was categorized as high. Moreover, behavioral aspects including farmers’ perceived value, risks, and benefit positively and significantly affected farmers’ acceptance of organic shallot farming.
