Abstract

The bio-based plastic industry, particularly the development of seaweed-based bioplastics, offers significant opportunities for sustainable development within the blue-green economy of South Sulawesi. This paper explores the untapped potential of bio-based plastics to address critical waste management challenges, providing targeted recommendations for the South Sulawesi government. We assess the current landscape of the bio-based plastic sector, identifying key areas for innovation and growth that align with circular and green economy principles and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We analyze factors driving industry development, including local resources like seaweed, market demand, and effective government support, while addressing barriers such as limited awareness and infrastructure deficits. The downstreaming processes for transforming raw seaweed into bioplastics are highlighted as essential actions for enhancing this sector. Through qualitative insights and a comprehensive literature review, our findings offer actionable guidance for improving waste management practices and promoting ecological sustainability within the blue economy framework. This research aims to equip policy-makers with strategies to harness the potential of bio-based and seaweed-based plastics, fostering a sustainable and circular future for South Sulawesi and advancing progress toward the SDGs.
