Abstract

Makassar's transformation into a smart city represents a huge step forward in urban innovation and sustainability in Indonesia and across the ASEAN region. This transformation seeks to address important urban concerns such as congestion, ageing infrastructure, and environmental sustainability by combining sophisticated technologies and participatory governance. Key methods include using Internet of Things (IoT) devices, data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve urban management, as well as improving public transportation, utilities, and waste management systems to make them more efficient and environmentally friendly. The effort prioritises open government and community involvement to ensure that smart city solutions fulfil the different requirements of all inhabitants. Makassar's smart city model acts as an example for other towns in the ASEAN region, encouraging economic growth, resilience, and sustainability. Makassar's journey to become a smart city helps to Southeast Asia's broad goals of sustainable development and regional integration by encouraging innovation and regional cooperation.
