- Abstract
This research investigates the effects of fluency strategy training instruction on improving speech fluen-cy among first-year English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at an Indonesian university. In many EFL context, speech fluency, which is crucial for effective communication, is often hindered by speak-ers’ excessive and poorly managed pauses. Employing a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measures, approximately 50 students from intact classes were assigned to either an experimental group, receiving specialized pause management strategy training, or a control group, receiving standard instruction. The training program consists of 11 lessons and tasks (meetings), focusing on identifying, classifying, and strategically managing filled and unfilled pauses through explanations, examples, and practice activities. Data was collected through pre- and post-intervention speaking tasks involving one-minute monologues. The data was analysed for pause frequency, duration, and type. The study aims to determine whether fluency strategy training can reduce pausing, enhance speech fluency, and improve overall communication effectiveness, contributing valuable insights into pedagogical practices for over-coming a significant barrier to fluent EFL communication.
