Abstract

The health and fitness industry in the UK includes more than 7,200 clubs with a total membership of more than 10 million. However, the COVID-19 pandemic that swept the world in 2020 has had a major impact on the industry, with many gyms required to close due to policies. Despite the rapid growth of the industry market size before the pandemic, the UK fitness industry is now in the stage of economic recovery. Through PESTEL analysis, Porter’s Five Forces model and corporate social responsibility (CSR) assessment, this paper discusses the external environment and internal competition factors that affect the development of the industry. According to the PESTEL analysis, government policy support, consumer demand growth and technological innovation have promoted the recovery of the industry, while green fitness programs have improved sustainable development capabilities. Porter’s Five Forces model shows that the threat of new entrants and substitutes is high and competition is fierce, but brand differentiation and innovation help companies maintain their advantage. In terms of corporate social responsibility, the industry promotes jobs and economic growth and actively reduces carbon emissions. Despite the challenges, the fitness industry shows the potential for continuous development through technological and service innovations.
