- Abstract
Mathematics is taught from kindergarten to university. Piaget’s constructivist learning theory states that basic mathematical skills are necessary for learning more complicated concepts. However, higher education students typically lack basic mathematics skills, making it difficult for them to compute, learn, analyze, and solve problems in daily life. Students’ choice of online games over studying contributes to their arithmetic abilities deficit. Educational policies should use digital and internet technology to adapt to the Industrial Revolution 4.0. This study aims to design and use Android-based games to improve the basic mathematical skills of higher education students. In addition, learning motivation is also an important factor influencing students’ learning outcomes. Therefore, this study will also examine how basic mathematical skills and learning motivation affect studentsc learning outcomes, particularly in the cognitive domain. This quantitative quasi-experimental study uses a two-group pre-test-post-test control group design. Multiple regression analysis will also examine how basic mathematics skills and learning motivation affect statistics learning outcomes. In this study, 50 Christian Psychology students from the State Christian Institute of Manado took the Statistics course as the sample. Students were randomly assigned to two 25-student groups. Classes A and B are Control and Experimental, respectively. Research findings indicate that the utilization of Android-based games has a substantial influence on enhancing student’s basic mathematical skills. Moreover, this study found that Student’s Learning Motivation did not partially impact Student’s Learning Outcomes. Nevertheless, when examining their combined effect, both proficiency in basic math skills and the motivation to learn have a concurrent influence on the student’s learning outcomes.
