Abstract

Because of the power shift from conventional to popular religion, the emergence of popular Islamic media in the digital age has changed people’s perspectives. Ironically, conservative and extreme views of Islam predominate in the digital sphere. As a result, this study investigates the methods used by moderate organizations to encourage religious moderation, especially through the Islamic portal nu.or.id, which seeks to be a reliable and peaceful source of information on Islam and Nu-an. In order to determine the degree to which the articles, ideas, and opinions posted on the site encourage moderation, this study examines them. It assesses moderate tendencies using Jürgen Habermas’ notion of communicative rationality. Three validity aspects—truth, accuracy, and honesty—are also used to evaluate the essays on nu.or.id. The study comes to the conclusion that, as a blessing for the world, attempts to encourage religious moderation through nu.or.id have significantly impacted the filtering of ideas or content that do not align with Islamic norms. The conservative-radical narrative of Islam is constantly refuted by writers on nu.or.id using rational and theological grounds. The tactic used by Islamic portals such as nu.or.id seems to appeal to Muslims in the middle class, who are frequently the target of fundamentalist organizations. As a result, using nu.or.id to reach a large audience is regarded as an effective strategy.
