Abstract

This research definitively explores Bell Hooks’ thoughts on critical pedagogy when it encounters the context of education and Christian education in Indonesia. This research uses literature study research as part of qualitative research. The research will analyze Hooks’ key ideas, such as imagination, identity, love, and hope, when in conflict with the dynamics of contemporary education. The primary focus is Hooks’ critique of the hierarchical and alienating traditional education system and his proposal to approach pedagogy with a more inclusive, imaginative, prophetic, dialogical, and transformative framework. This research explores how Hooks’ theory could be used in Christian education in Indonesia. Socio-economic-cultural complexities and local-national challenges have been considered. The analysis shows that Hooks’ critical pedagogy work offers an important perspective for reforming educational practices, strengthening students’ active participation, and providing a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive learning environment. However, careful adaptation to the Indonesian landscape is necessary. This research presents a reflective discourse on education reform in Indonesia and highlights the importance of a communal, critical, and social justice-oriented approach — exactly the approach Hooks would have endorsed.
