Abstract

A pluralistic society requires social engineering to build acceptance and recognition between one group and another as well as to find a moderate attitude in society. This article develops ideas about dialogue which is assumed to be an effective strategy for building a pluralistic society and implementing religious moderation. Dialogue can be seen as a daily practice that is commonplace in society, that if carried out properly, has the power to unite a pluralistic society. However, dialogue has not been maximized and used as a tool for the transformation of a pluralistic society. Dialogue in a pluralistic society can be used as a method to build communication and find joint solutions to problems faced by diverse community groups. Dialogue in this study is positioned as a method as well as the strategy for religious moderation and transformation of a pluralistic society. This is an offer after paying attention to various dialogue practices in society and exploring approaches to dialogue by several scientists from various disciplinary backgrounds. It is viewed that public awareness about dialogue and the accuracy of conducting dialogue will certainly contribute positively to the management of diversity in Indonesia. This also helps in creating a moderate society because dialogue basically changes understanding which has an impact on the attitudes and behavior of individuals and groups of society. As a result, it offers three dialogue models that can be used as methods and strategies for implementing religious moderation and pluralistic societal transformation, namely: (1) dialogue of action, (2) dialogue of life, and (3) dialogue of thought transformation.
