Abstract

This research aims to explore the phenomenon of religion in some parts of Indonesia that are still lack of tolerance and inclusiveness. In this case, state leader has a tremendously important position in guaranteeing religious freedom for his people. Departed from the narration in the Book of Ezra 1:1-11 which tells the story about Cyrus as a leader who delivers the exiles in a nonviolence way. This study aims to analyze the narration in the Book of Ezra 1:1-11 as reference of religious moderation in Indonesia. The research uses qualitative methods based on library research, that specifically using the narrative criticism as a scalpel. Narrative criticism is a criticism centered on a text or story, considering the elements in it. This includes the character and characterization, plot, setting, narrator, point of view, implied author, and implied reader. The results of this research describe Cyrus as a wise ruler, loyal to his people, and full of tolerance to other nations. His attitude and action are integrated in the liberation decree that proclaimed for the exiles in Babylon. Cyrus can be a good example for a state leader to practice national commitment, tolerance, nonviolence way, and accommodative to local culture based on religious moderation’s principles.
