Abstract

The purpose of the research is to examine whether there is an influence between poisonous parenting style and emotional regulation on self-concept among university students. The participants are 201 respondents of the university students aged 18–25 residing in Jabodetabek. The approach used is quantitative with multiple regression analysis method, to determine the magnitude and direction of the relationship between the self-concept as a dependent variable while poisonous parenting style and emotional regulation as the independent variables. The data collection instrument used the Personal Self-Concept (PSC) Questionnaire by Goñi et al. [1], The Indonesian Version of The Poisonous Parenting Style Scale (IVPPSS) by Syahid et al. [2], and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) by Gratz & Roemer [3]. The validity test of the measurement tool used the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) technique. The results indicate that there is a significant influence of both poisonous parenting style and emotional regulation variables on self-concept among university students. Minor hypothesis test results state that there is a significant influence between the pageant parent, awareness, clarity, and strategies variables on self-concept. Meanwhile, there is no significant influence between the dismissive parent, the contemptuous parent, nonacceptance, goals, and impulse variables on self-concept.
