- Abstract
The impact of the Christian encounter on Dayak Ngaju culture in 1839 led to the separation of the Dayak Ngaju people from their own traditions, including the detachment of traditional Dayak music from the new Christian converts. This was despite traditional music being an integral part of worship, education, cultural preservation, and entertainment for the Dayak people, which had existed since the tribe’s origins. This separation persisted into the 1920s, and without ongoing efforts at inculturation, traditional Dayak music risked being forgotten. The goal of inculturation is to foster new creations of traditional Dayak Ngaju music that resonate with younger generations, while deepening both the Christian faith and appreciation for traditional arts and culture. The methodology used is ethnography, focusing on translation, transfer, adjustment, and new creation stages.
