- Abstract
This article highlights a cultural tradition of the Dayak Dusun tribe, residing in a region called Kalahien in the Central Kalimantan Province of Indonesia. The tradition in question is known as Panindrai. Panindrai involves making contributions to families mourning the loss of a loved one. The aim of the article is to develop a theology of death based on the practice and concept of Panindrai. To achieve this, an approach from Clifford Geertz known as the interpretation of culture is utilized. The findings are as follows: First, Panindrai as a social practice is understood as a means of solidarity among tribe members to alleviate the burden of grieving families by providing economic goods such as money, rice, coffee, sugar, etc. Second, Panindrai serves to strengthen social relationships among tribe members; through visiting and bringing Panindrai to mourning families, they support and connect with each other. Third, Panindrai functions as an implementation of the tribe’s political culture, reflecting their political attitudes and adherence to customary laws. Fourth, Panindrai manifests their belief in mythology, representing a local theological value that life continues in the realm of the deceased after death. The cultural interpretation of Panindrai, when related to Christian theology of death, reveals a shared belief in life after death, a respect for the deceased, and a call to mutual empathy.
