Abstract

Currently, the construction of pumped storage power stations is in a peak period, and due to layout requirements at the station’s location, it is sometimes challenging to find ideal geological conditions for the underground powerhouse location. This necessitates excavating underground caverns in areas with partially layered soft rock distribution. This study, based on the Panlong Pumped Storage Power Station project, delves deep into the stability of large underground cavern groups located in regions with partially layered soft rock distribution. The research reveals that significant deformations in the surrounding rock of the caverns with alternating soft and hard rock layers predominantly occur within the soft rock layers. Additionally, the larger principal stress concentrations tend to occur within the hard rock adjacent to the soft rock. The findings of this study have important practical implications for a comprehensive understanding of the displacement, stress, and plastic zone distribution patterns in such caverns’ surrounding rock. These results can be used to guide the design of cavern support systems.
